Helpful Fire Safety Tips from the
St. Clair Shores Fire Fighters

Fire Safety Tips are something that everyone in the family
should know in case there is a fire. By following and
practicing these Fire Safety Tips you may avoid serious
injury or death due to a fire outbreak in your home or
place of business,
Below we have listed many Fire Safety Tips that may help
you in the future.

Your Home:
Should have several smoke detectors to keep your family
safe. In fact, there should be at least one on every floor of
your house. A good rule to remember is that there should
be one smoke detector for every person in the house plus,
one more.

Have an escape plan:
An escape plan is a map of your house that shows how to
get out when there's smoke or fire. It's important to have
one and know it well so that you and your family can
escape in case of an emergency.

Second floor escape:
Do you live in a two story home? If so there may be a
need to escape through second floor windows. Parents
need to plan for this possibility. Consider a non-
combustible escape ladder if there's no way to climb out
onto a balcony or roof.

Meeting Place:
Your escape plan should also include a safe meeting place
for everyone in your family to gather after they get out. It
should be in front of your house, but far enough away
that it's safe from the fire.

If there is a Fire:
Call 911, leave the house right away and do not go back
in to get clothing, toys or pets.
Apartment or High-Rise residents.
DO NOT USE THE ELEVATOR. Escape via the fire exit
(staircase) designated for such use.

Smoke:
If you encounter smoke while escaping, try to use a
different way out. If there is no other option, crawl on
your hands and knees to the exit, keeping your head low.
